On Target

My wife, Lynne, and I went to the shooting range the other day. We do our best to hit the mark but, truth be told, we both could use some coaching. My wife then noticed a bright looking young man assisting another woman with her aim, so she too asked for assistance. Next thing I knew, Lynne was hitting the target with better accuracy. I wanted in on that, so I swallowed my pride and asked for assistance as well. What he told me really resonated with how I approach counseling my clients.

He said, “You just need to aim in the general direction and stop trying to focus on multiple things at the same time. When you focus on the one skill I show you, only then will you hit your target with accuracy.”

Many times a client will come into my office with a list of issues and concerns he or she wants to address. Focusing on too many issues at one time can cause a person to become pretty discouraged. Instead, I encourage my client to pick one behavior or issue to work on, then we can set up a plan to implement and practice one skill at a time. After success in one area, we can then focus on another.

Hebrews 12:2

“Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
